THIS year’s annual PPC Matopos 33 miler Ultra-Marathon will take place on April 1 in Matobo National Park as the cement manufacturing company seeks to enrich the continent’s infrastructure and people through sports.
This years event which is hosted at the national heritage sight is the 5th edition of the event.
At a press briefing in Bulawayo, the Managing Director of Zimbabwe of PPC Limited, Kelibone Masiyane said the event is a corporate social responsibility initiative set to benefit the society.
“This year we celebrate the fifth edition of the race, set in the heart of the stunning Matopo National Park, said Masiyane.
“At PPC we believe that our purpose is to enrich Africa’s infrastructure and people, and sports present a valuable opportunity to give back to communities and nurture local talent.”
Also as a way giving back to the community, Masiyane said the event will also give exposure to the city of Bulawayo.
“With many cities around the world gathered establishing marathons that put those cities on the map, PPC Zimbabwe believes that the ultra marathon is a fantastic opportunity to bring the onto the City of Kings,” he said.
He said the company will also identify one school or clinic that it will develop in the district.
“As the PPC Matopos ultrathon approaches, PPC Zimbabwe will identify a school or clinic in Matobo district to develop. In this way we are going beyond sport to leave a lasting legacy to Matobo, developing and uplifting the area.
The company boasts its status in Zimbabwean athletics calendar as the only as the only ultra marathon race in the country and recognised internationally.
“The PPC Matopos Miler is currently the only ultra marathon race in Zimbabwe and the course is measured and certified by the international Association of Athletics Federations, he said.
‘The value of this immeasurable, allowing the race to have a unique status on the Zimbabwean athletics calendar.’
The race is also the qualifying race for other races internationally including the south Africa’s renowned Comrades Marathon.
