Some schools in Kezi, Matabeleland South, are reportedly withholding results of owing Grade 7 and Form 4 pupils who wrote their examinations in 2012 creating a barrier for them to secure Form One and Lower Six places respectively.
Parents from Kezi are accusing schools such as St Josephs and Bidi Primary and Mqabuko High of violating the rights of children by refusing to release the results. Sipho Jiyane a parent, said a number of children are still failing to progress saying schools are adamant on payment of fees first.
“We are calling on government to take action against these schools because the results which are being withheld are for orphans. I can also tell you that schools have since engaged Chief Bidi in an effort to force parents to pay the outstanding monies,” said Jiyane.
Jiyane said as parents they fear the move by these schools will worsen the performance of their children.
However, Matabeleland South education director Tumisung Tabela said there is no government policy giving schools authority to withhold results of owing pupils.
She said: “First, children do not have any contracts with schools, but parents should make payments plans while that concerned child is given his/her results to progress to the next level.”
She said refusal by schools to release results is an infringement upon the rights of children to education.
