A former member of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has been hauled before the courts for masquerading as a police officer and demanding bribes from vendors.
Innocent Thebe of Magwegwe North ran out of luck after a vendor suspected him of being an impostor and alerted the police leading to his arrest.
Allegations against Thebe are that on Monday night, he coined a plan to pose as a member of the ZRP to local night club and demanded to search the premises.
In the process, Thebe allegedly came across an identity card belonging to Inspector Chivandire of Bulawayo Central Police Station Traffic Section.
He allegedly took the identity card and used it in his bid to ask for vendors’ licences, before he demanded bribes.
Thebe pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Abednico Ndebele and was remanded in custody to 14 February.
The court ordered that he be examined by a medical doctor after he claimed that he was assaulted by police by the time he went to surrender the work identity card belonging to Inspector Chivandire, which he said he had picked.
