Commuter omnibus crash injures 18 in Belmont

A red-robot evasion effort ended in tragedy for a city centre bound commuter omnibus after it overturned and injured 18 people along Plumtree Road on Thursday.

Witnesses say the accident occurred at Birkenhead, near Cold Storage Company (CSC) in Belmont at 10am.

“It seems the kombi, which was from Nketa suburb was racing with another one from the same suburb and tried to beat a red robot and used a short cut route,” said Thabani Moyo.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned twice.

“He was speeding he was racing with another kombi, he failed to negotiate a turn,” said Moyo.

The 18 who were injured were hospitalised.

Contacted for comment the traffic police department could not avail full details, but confirmed the accident.

“We are still verifying fact from the scene of the accident, after which we will be able to give a full account of what transpired this morning at Birkenhead,” said a police official.
