Bulawayo City Council says the Minister of Finance Minister Tendai Biti has reversed his decision to take away the powers of awarding tenders from local authorities.
Late last year the minister released a statement which barred local authorities from awarding tenders on account that their tender awarding processes were marred by corruption. He gave such authority to the State procurement Board.
Speaking at the full council meeting yesterday, Bulawayo Mayor Councillor Patrick Thaba Moyo said the minister told him personally that he was reneging on tender processes.
“The Minister has decided to leave the procurement board intact,” said Cllr Moyo. “It is now left with the council to caucus and map a way forward for carrying on its normal activities.”
Speaking at the same meeting Councillor Phineas Ndlovu requested the council to ask Biti to put it in writing for record’s sake.
Attempts to get comments from the minister were unsuccessful as his mobile was unreachable.
